Among the many rooftops that animate Italian summer nights and beyond, we choose two of them. Very different but both fascinating, just like the two cities that host them, Rome and Milan.
Summer               Summer
Summer comes when the rooftops of the city turn into cozy and elegant locations to sip an aperitif, for dinner finally enjoying the beautiful and long evenings and having fun. The rooftop is spread all over the world now and there is really only the embarrassment of choice. We propose two of them, here they are.
In the heart of the Città Eterna, the Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese does not deny its class of 5 star boutique hotels even on the top floor, on the terrace overlooking not only the park itself but the entire capital. Housed in a 7 floors 19th-century palace, which has always been the focus of artists, actors and filmmakers, for its elegance and its important past the Hotel is nowadays included among the 190 Historic Buildings of Italy. Over its 81 luxurious rooms and suites opening on the wonderful corners of Rome, there is the La Terrasse Cuisine & Lounge restaurant overlooking the gardens of Villa Borghese, Villa Medici Park and the Dome of St. Peter. Made of light and functional and furnishings materials, with panoramic windows and a fully open roof in the beautiful season, La Terrasse Cuisine & Lounge, 3 Forks of the Michelin Guide 2015, before dinner (from 6 pm to 8 pm) offers the Sofitel Signature Cocktails by the Head Barman Mirko Cagnazzo accompanied by delicious tapas from Chef Giuseppe D’Alessio’s kitchen for an Aperochic that represents a gourmet and engaging experience. Try Milanese in Bottle, based on rhubarb Zucca, Campari and vanilla liqueur, or the imaginative creation #Via Lombardia 47, with Martini Rubino, Cynar, Agricanto and drops of absinthe. www.sofitel.com
The season of aperitifs is also rebuilt under the spire of the Milanese Duomo and those of Hotel Milano Scala and its panoramic terrace are inspired by the Green and Glamour. The hotel recently restyled its top floor, enriching it with a wide variety of plants for a real greenhouse with panoramic views over Brera, the Sforzesco Castle and the modern city’s skyline. Chef Fabio Castiglioni’s exclusive kitchen, inspired by the Green Food concept, delights the guest of Sky Terrace Milano Scala, while the aromatic plants create a glamorous and evocative frame. This summer, the happy hour offers finger food such as Tigella with basil cream and pistachio mortadella or Mini bagel with salmon, songino and yogurth sauce accompanied by a selection of new cocktails prepared with herbs grown in the garden close to the aperitif area, the highest in Milan. And here are the novelties, because besides classic vegetables and fruits, tomatoes and edible flowers such as begonia, this summer they also come up with varieties of unusual plants such as goji berries, aromatic herbs such as oyster (or mertensia Maritima) and lemongrass (in Italian more known as citronella). All plants that with their flavors also enrich the menus at km 0 of the Hotel and its Primadonna Restaurant & Wine Bar. www.hotelmilanoscala.it
