The Friulian winery Altùris was founded in the heart of the Colli Orientali del Friuli in 2009 by Marco and Massimo Zorzettig, the third generation of a family that has always known how to best express the natural vocation of its territory and defend its best traditions. The mùl, the mule, the son of a donkey stallion and a mare, has always been a perfect hybrid for our alpine and to work in the fields. But the mùl is also the perfect synthesis between red wines that are too robust and tannic and white wines softer and more floral: an all peasant wisdom that once beat even in glasses. “Wrong” wines, hybrid wines, historical blends that are now presented in a limited edition, 10 thousand bottles per variety. Thus, the Red Mùl is obtained from the red Merlot and the white Sauvignon while the White Mùl comes from the encounter between the white Chardonnay and the red Cabernet Sauvignon, all varietal wines of the altùris, as in the mother tongue they are called the beautiful hills of Friuli. For both Red and White Mùl

grapes are harvested and vinified separately. After assembly, the wine is bottled and presented on the market about a year and a half after the harvest. We previewed them for lunch at the Milanese restaurant of chef Daniel Canzian. The Red Mùl, which is offered to the palate with a beautiful ruby red color and hints of cherry with subtle hints of vanilla, should be served fresh and it is excellent as an aperitif but also combined with delicate first courses, fish, white meats and fried. White Mùl, with a brilliant copper color, perfectly combines its notes of vanilla and ripe fruit with substantial first courses but also tasty fish, white and fried meat. The labels of the two Mùl were designed by Natan Pirac, a young emerging Friulian artist and son of art. The naive trait highlights a vine that seems to welcome the sky, nocturnal in the Red Mùl and at sunset in the White Mùl. In the background a small ancient village and at the top of the plant an owl, symbol since the antiquity of good wishes. A good wish that becomes concrete in the will of the Zorzettig brothers to devolve each year a share of the proceeds from the sale of the two wines to the Wine Life Mùl Association for oncological research (info www.alturis.it).
