A thousand years that represent the melting pot of our civilization, ten centuries in which the European languages, nations, banks and universities were born. In which the ocean explorations and the first mechanical experiments were developed. An age of continuous innovations and scientific discoveries: from the water wheel to the windmill, from the compass to mechanical clocks, from the fork, pasta and salami to Arabic numerals and the name of musical notes. This is the Middle Age, ready to be discovered thanks to the Festival del Medioevo, which for its fourth edition has chosen the theme “Barbari. La scoperta degli altri“. On September, the 26th to 30th, Gubbio will host this important event full of events and illustrious speakers who will tell the great migrations, the defense of borders, the identity of those individuals and of those different peoples from us, those who speak strange languages and appear as enemies. A journey, a discovery, between otherness and identity, between friend and stranger, to reach a goal or overcome separations. A date both cultured and popular, with over one hundred events and over two hundred protagonists among historians, writers, artists, architects, scientists and journalists in a formula far from medieval festivals and re-enactments, which however will not fail. In the busy five-day program there will be the History Lessons, the Medieval Book Fair and the Miners and Calligraphs from the World event, an indirect tribute to Steve Jobs who learned in the Palladino  calligraphy school  the secrets of the characters, the signs elegance and the subliminal messages of design that then he transferred to the “font” of the Mac. And also premieres of the television season of RAI Storia, a cultural event dedicated to everyday life in the Italian cities of the eleventh-fifteenth centuries, the exhibition “Gubbio al tempo di Giotto “, in-depth studies with focus and round tables including the” Tolkien session 2018 “, which explores the world of the author of” The Lord of the Rings “, as well as evening shows and events. Finally, the Fuori Festival, a journey through music and philosophy in the cloister of the monumental complex of San Pietro. A great lens on the past to better understand the present. And to try to see with new eyes that Middle Age that so resembles to ours. (Info: festivaldelmedioevo.it)
