For Christmas 2020 the Fondazione AIRC online shop is enriched with new solidarity products to be received at home or sent to those who want to feel close despite the distance.
The solidarity products of the Fondazione AIRC are back for those who want to concretely support research on pediatric cancer also at Christmas 2020, a gesture that takes on even greater importance this year in which the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the progress of cancer research, slowing down the activities in the laboratories and the transfer of results to patients, also penalizing the collection of new funds for the work of researchers. In Italy every year, cancer affects about 1,400 children up to the age of 14 and 800 adolescents between 15 and 19 years. Thanks to the commitment of doctors and researchers, today about 82% of children and 86% of adolescents are alive five years after diagnosis. While 3 out of 10 children survived a
diagnosis of cancer in the 1970s, today 3 out of 4 recover completely. However, for some cancers affecting children, often very rare, specific therapies are lacking, developed on the basis of the results of dedicated studies. Despite the difficulties of recent months, the AIRC Foundation confirms its commitment to support the multi-year projects underway this year: 39 projects and 8 specific scholarships on pediatric cancers, with a total investment of over 5 million euros, to develop therapies increasingly effective, personalized and less toxic for young patients.
